<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: normal;">Tara M Ruttley, PhD is an Associate Program Scientist for the International Space Station (ISS) for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Johnson Space Center in Houston. Dr. Ruttley believes that the distinct changes that happen to living and physical systems in the unique microgravity environment can tell us more about who we are on Earth, where we come from, and where we might be headed. Her role in the ISS Program Science Office consists of representing and communicating all research on the space station, and supporting the ISS Chief Scientist’s research recommendations to the ISS Program Manager and to NASA Headquarters. Combining her love for Biology and human spaceflight, she pursued her BS degree in Biology and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State University. Upon completion of her MS degree, she came to work for NASA in 2001 where she began her career as a biomedical engineer for the medical equipment and human research hardware used on the ISS. While working as an engineer, she concurrently pursued her PhD in Neuroscience and joined the ISS Program Science Office upon completion, where she’s since enjoyed playing an active role in the science activities taking place on the ISS. She believes that curiosity comes naturally to us across all ages, and today’s biggest challenge for scientists is sharing the relevance of new knowledge in a way that has positive impacts here on Earth. What we gain from science in low Earth orbit paves the way for the future of NASA exploration, and drives advancements in human health, economy, education, and international partnerships. Dr. Ruttley has authored publications ranging from hardware design to neurological science, and also holds a U.S. utility patent.
Jill Hruby is the director of Sandia National Laboratories and president of Sandia
Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation, which operates
Sandia for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration
(NNSA). Sandia has principal sites in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Livermore, California,
operating revenue of about $2.6 billion, and more than 10,000 employees.

In 2010, Hruby came to Sandia’s New Mexico site after 27 years at Sandia’s California
location to become vice president of the Energy, Nonproliferation, and High-Consequence Security Division, and leader of
Sandia’s International, Homeland, and Nuclear Security Program Management Unit.

As vice president, Hruby oversaw more than 1,300 employees and contractors and managed work in such areas as global
security, energy technologies, weapon and force protection, critical asset protection, the nuclear fuel cycle, geoscience, and
climate. The PMU mission encompassed nonproliferation and arms control; securing and safeguarding nuclear weapons
and nuclear materials; protecting critical U.S. government assets and installations; ensuring the resilience of physical and
cyber infrastructures; and reducing the risks of terrorist threats and catastrophic events.

Hruby joined Sandia in 1983 and did research in thermal and fluid sciences, solar energy, and nuclear weapon components.
During her career, she has been engaged in nanoscience research, hydrogen storage, mechanical component design,
thermal analysis and microfluidics.

She earned her first management appointment in 1989 and held technical leadership positions at the California lab in
polymer and electrochemical technologies, materials synthesis, and inorganic and physical chemistry for eight years. She
then served as senior manager in organizations responsible for weapon components, micro-technologies, and materials
processing.

Hruby was named a technical director in 2003, first leading the Materials and Engineering Sciences Center and its work in
hydrogen science and engineering and microsystem science and fabrication. In 2005 Jill became director of the Homeland
Security and Defense Systems Center, fostering Sandia work in systems analysis, applied research, and systems engineering,
primarily for homeland security and nuclear weapons missions.

Hruby earned her bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and her master’s degree from the University of California at
Berkeley, both in mechanical engineering. She has authored numerous publications, holds three patents in microfabrication
and won an R&D 100 Award in solid-state radiation detection. She serves on the Threat Reduction Advisory Committee for
the Department of Defense, and the Board of Chemical Science and Technology for the National Academy of Sciences. She
has served on several university advisory boards, on community boards in Livermore and Albuquerque and as the campus
executive at Georgia Institute of Technology.swekcigedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08324108096818292708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4502106607312192094.post-35153932878314891422015-03-17T11:34:00.000-05:002015-03-17T11:34:48.123-05:00IGED PhotosIGED 2015 photos can be found at https://picasaweb.google.com/108566316593959969624/IGED2015?authkey=Gv1sRgCOew-vf2m-zSaQswekcigedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08324108096818292708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4502106607312192094.post-37250763839538576692015-03-08T11:25:00.000-05:002015-03-08T11:25:35.978-05:00IGED in the NewsIGED was a great success! We are planning both of these events for the same weekend. IGED will be held on Friday, February 27th, from 7 AM – 2 PM. iCON15 will open Friday evening and run through Saturday night. Both events will be held at the Kansas City Marriott Country Club Plaza.

IGED is SWE-KC’s largest engineering outreach event. The purpose of the event is to assure high school girls that they can succeed in an engineering field. IGED will consist of an industry fair, a university fair, an engineering discipline fair, a college panel, a keynote speaker, and a hands-on engineering activity.

We are also proud to be hosting the 2015 Region i Conference (iCON15). We look forward to welcoming up to 250 professional and collegiate members to Kansas City from the Region i states of Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Wyoming. The annual Region i Conference supports diversity in STEM, offers networking opportunities, and provides personal, professional, and SWE development. This year’s conference theme is “Engineer a Game Plan”. This highlights Kansas City’s many successful architecture and engineering firms, several of which have designed notable stadiums worldwide, including for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil and for the London Olympics. Furthermore, the theme will promote the mission of SWE and the goal of the conference: to stimulate women to achieve full potential as engineers and leaders by “engineering a game plan for their careers.”

IGED mentors are welcome to register for iCON15: http://www.swe-kc.org/icon15/. We look forward to an exciting 2015!swekcigedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08324108096818292708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4502106607312192094.post-80089393927299582732014-03-19T10:34:00.001-05:002014-03-19T10:34:40.979-05:00IGED Photos and more News Coverage
